An introduction
Just a Christian creative sharing her work...
The world is full of experts. It’s full of YouTubers telling you they know the secret to the perfect photo, Instagrammers who know exactly how badly you’ve been eating and what it’s going to do to your health and Pinterest boards that always look better than what you try to mimic. So it’s really hard to feel qualified to share some of what you know, some of yourself. And honestly, greater than the fear of being cancelled is the fear that no one will listen. That no one will notice the little piece of yourself you’ve made open to the world.
All that being said, I’ve been reading ‘Show Your Work!’ by Austin Kleon and have been encouraged to still show my work. Or maybe not my work per se, but the process of my work, what I think about it and also my inspirations, the art that I love that surely influences my own. It also might turn into something else completely and that’s also fine. But before I begin, I must give a disclaimer that I am not a writer and my spelling tends to be interesting, but that’s why we have autocorrect and an older sister with a Masters in English. With that being said, I do promise not to let AI help me write these. I’d prefer it to be slightly incoherent than lose the authenticity of my messy thoughts.
I know some may find it weird that in these ramblings I refer to my films, photos or whatever I create as art or refer to myself as an artist. You might say (as my inner thoughts often do) that she just takes photos of landscapes or buildings, or she just has a couple of random YouTube videos… and maybe that’s true in a way. However, I know that God has created me to be a maker, to be creative in how my brain works and how I see the world. I call my work art, not because I think they belong in an art gallery, but because into what I create I pour pieces of myself and the perspective God has given me, to create something that didn’t exist before. I hope that, through some of my work, others might see God’s glory radiating through. I hope to be the paintbrush, not the Painter.
That’s all for today. I hope that as you read this, you feel inspired to step out and share a bit of yourself as well. Not with the purpose of seeking attention, but out of a spirit of generosity, to help others who are still in seasons you’ve already overcome or give someone a new perspective.
Catch me next time as I write about some of my recent work and some things that encouraged, inspired or challenged me recently.
A little bit about me.
Hi, I’m Talitha. I’m a Christian filmmaker and photographer from Cape Town, South Africa. I call myself a visual content creator because I dabble in all sorts of visual mediums. My favourite thing to do is to capture nature and my travels.
